Cumin Seed, or Cuminum cyminum, is also known as Cummin, Cymen (Old English), Cuminum (Latin), Kuminon (Greek), Kammun (Arabic), Kammon (Hebrew), Kam?Çnu (Akkadian), Gamun (Sumerian).
Cumin is a member of the parsley family and should not be confused with black cumin, the Chinese herb, or sweet cumin, better known as fennel, or caraway.
The cumin plant grows over a foot tall and is harvested by hand.
Cumin seeds have eight ridges with oil canals. They resemble caraway seeds, being oblong in shape, longitudinally ridged, and yellow-brown in color, like other members of the umbelliferae family such as caraway, parsley, and dill.
