Burdock Root, or Arctium Lappa, is also known as gobo, poor man's potatoes, Arctium, Bardana, Beggar's Buttons, Burr Seed, Clotbur, Cocklebur, Cockle Buttons, Edible Burdock, Fox's Clote, Great Bur, Great Burdocks, Happy Major, Hardock, Harebur, Lappa, Love Leaves, Personata, Philanthropium, Thorny Burr.
The name of the genus, Arctium, is derived from the Greek "arktos," a bear, due to the roughness of the burs, and Lappa, from a word meaning "to seize."
Burdock's roots grow straight down as much as 3 feet into the subsoil.
